MODULES
2oth Architecture workshop 2008 : Tranxxit

INTRODUCTION of MODULES
The history of piracy dates back more than 3000 years, but its accurate account depends on the actual meaning of the word ‘pirate’. In English, the word piracy has many different meanings and its usage is still relatively new. For a great many years there remained no unambiguous definition of piracy. Norse riders of the 9th and 11th century AD were not considered pirates but rather, were called "Danes" or "Vikings". On 2008 new generation of pirates gather in Pearl Island for the quest to seek for the solution to “tranxxit” (change) current situation in the island which suffering from development effect disaster to a better place and more sustainable. The winner of the quest will become the Ultimate Conqueror.

The Pearl Island was under enormous pressure of disaster breaks on every part of the island. Local oracle said the catastrophe due to unbalance progress and lack of sustainable architecture touch. To alter this situation, an ultimate conqueror has to be sought upon. Institutes from all over the nation have to send their best pirates to represent them in the wars to win the crown as the ultimate conqueror. Later, the pirates will establish a team and gathers its crew to complete the mission.

Modules for Participant
Module 1
Tranx-Catapult
Brief of module
Each group is given a treasure chest which contains 6 “Aztec Gold”. The “Aztec Golds” are the properties that represent equipments and materials they have to use in Module 2. Participants can increase the amount of their equipments or materials by “robbing” other groups and the group which has more things has the advantage in Module 2.
The treasure chest contains:

  • 10 bamboos with 1m length,
  • 10m ropes,
  • a saw.

The 6 “Aztec Golds” represent:

  • 10 bamboos,
  • ropes,
  • a saw,
  • a cutlass (parang),
  • nails,
  • a hammer.

Each group is provided with two cannons. In the battle between two groups, each group will have 4 members in charge of firing cannons and each 6 members wears  an “Aztec Gold”. The other 4 members are reserved players. The players stand still at their area. The gunner can attack other group by firing water bags to the opponent. Participant who is hit by the water bags have to get out of the field and give the opponent his “Aztec Gold”. The reserved player of the opponent will wear the “Aztec Gold” and join the battle. In 7 minutes time, the group which gets the most “Aztec Gold” from the opponent wins the battle.
* “Aztec Gold” is golden coin used for pirates’ trade.

Materials needed
Balloons, water & pails– water bags,
wood (for making cannon),
wood pieces & string (for making “Aztec Gold”)

Estimated time
1 battle for 7 minutes.
Totally 12 battles = 1 hour 30 minutes

Suggested venue
Padang Minden

Module 2a
Tranx- Aztec
Brief of module
Each group of participants will use the equipments and materials inside the treasure chest from Module 1 to construct 2 structures, i.e. a floating structure and a land structure. Each group has to design and construct a floating tower and a simple land structure below the tower to transfer it on land. The floating tower should be at least 1.8m in height and the base should not exist 1m x 1m. The land structure should be designed to enable the floating structure to be transfered from the land to the sea in an easier way. Both structures should be portable and able fit into any form of transport.

Materials needed
Saw, cutlass (parang), bamboo, ropes, nails, hammer

Estimated time
2 hours 30 minutes

venue
HBP car park

Outcome

  • To impart a comprehensive understanding of the nature of floating structure.
  • To be able to integrate technological principles in structure, environmental friendly design and materials.
  • To be able to think critically and propose innovative, creative and proactive solutions to the challenge in the built environment.

Module 2b
Tranx-Jolly Roger
Brief of module
Part 1:
The floating structure built in Module 2a will be tested in this module. Each group will be given a quiz of 7 architectural based questions. Every question represents 1 load with weight 200g, 500g and 1kg according to the difficulty of the question. The load corresponding to the question is added to the floating structure of the group if their answer is wrong. The participants can decide themselves where to place the load on their floating structure to minimize the effect to the structure. The structure with lesser load will have the advantage to float.

Part 2:
Participants will move their floating structure to the sea using the mobile land structure constructed in Module 2a. The efficiency of the mobile land structure will be tested based on the time taken for them to move the floating structure to the sea. Then, they have to float their floating structure on the sea. The floating tower has to float for at least 3 minutes.

Materials needed
Stop watch, whistle, 200g, 500g and 1kg load

Estimated time
Part 1 : 1 hour
Part 2 & 3 : 2 hours 30 minutes

Venue
Ferringhi Beach

Outcome

  • To understand loading on structures, various types of loads, resultant, moment and reaction theories.
  • To understand better the Archimedes Principle.
  • To brush up the architectural knowledge

Module 3
Heritage-tracking
Brief of module
Each group of participants will combine with another group of observers to carry out this module. The new teams will explore 16-24 heritages in Georgetown through a few trails. Each team will be given 16 or more pictures of architectural element or scene which they will see along the journey. They need to locate them at the map given. At the end of the trip they have to finish the task given. All groups have to return to *Padang Kota at 3.30pm and submit their task.

*subject to change

Materials needed
Pictures, maps

Estimated time
6 hours including lunch time

Venue
Georgetown

Outcome

    • To explore various type of architecture style in Georgetown.
    • To enhance the ability to observe and identify.

    Modules for lecturer
    Module 1
    Tranx-Paint
    Brief of module
Tranx-paint is a canvas painting activity on 1mx18m canvas. Lecturers are required to create their own canvas themes but must be related to the MAB 2008 themes that is Tranxxit-ecotecture.  *For the record, there are 27 lecturers from different institutes participate in this event thus, to makes thing easier, they will be divided into 9 group. Which mean each group consists of 3 members. The 18 meters length of canvas will be divided to 9 parts hereby, one part for one group. The painting will be judged base on the creativity of expressing the group themes, aesthetic and how much relevant their theme to this event theme. This task are to be started on module 1 which is on 2pm, 9th June 2008 then it’s up to the participants to find free time to complete their painting . The date of submission will be informed later.

    *Subject to change
    Material needed
For this canvas painting, material needed is cloth/white plain fabric/canvas, suitable paint, paint brushes, paint plate and architectural genius.

    Estimated time
The task will begin on the second day of event and to be submitted on the fifth day

    Suggested Venue
    Planning studio 200

    Outcome

    *Attraction
The length for this canvas is incredibly long, that is 18 meters, the scene during participant drawing the canvas in long line is indeed very harmony but the result will be outstanding and historical.

    Modules for Observer
    Module 1
    Tranx-Sculpture
    Brief of module
    Part1 :
Before the MAB programme, a recycling campaign will be carried out in HBP school to collect the recycled materials needed for the module. The campaign will last for 3 months.

    Part2 :
Each group of observers needs to design and produce a sculpture based on MAB 2008 theme, “tranxxit”, Ecotecture or “The Ultimate Conqueror” using recycled materials such as aluminum cans, plastic bottles, wire and old newspaper. The sculpture should not exceed maximum height of 2m. Observers need to name their sculpture and state the design concept on a presentation board. This will be carried out throughout the whole week. Observers are encouraged to produce their sculpture whenever they are free.

    Materials needed
Recycled materials collected from public, equipments for sculpture making

    Module 2
    Tranx-Raft
    Brief of module
Each group of observers will use the equipments and materials provided by the organizer to construct a raft. The base of the raft should not exceed 1.2m x 1.2m. The observers have to design a “jolly roger” for their raft. The stability of the raft will be tested on the sea. The raft that can support the most observers on it wins the competition.
